While the Nebbiolo grown in Barolo and Barbaresco is certainly more famous, the Nebbiolo grown in the Ghemme appellation is widely recognized as one of the greatest expressions of the variety. Indeed, Cantalupo's single-vineyard bottlings possess the power and longevity of their more famous cousins to the southwest. In Piemonte, the 1996 harvest was one of the greatest vintages of the twentieth century. This wine, vinified in the traditional manner, is no exception: it has all the power of a Barolo.
