Amaro Averna
Amaro, literally “bitter”, is a popular Italian digestivo, typically served after-dinner, and available in numerous diverse varieties. Amaro Averna is named after Salvatore Averna, who was born into a well-off family of textile merchants in 1802. In the industrious Sicilian town of Caltanissetta, Salvatore became an active member of the abbey of Santo Spirito. There the friars produced an herbal elixir which followed a secret recipe, a recipe which in 1854 the friars handed to Salvatore as a token of gratitude. In 1868, he began production for household guests until his son, Francesco, decided to promote the Averna bitter by presenting it at various fairs in Italy and abroad.
By 1895, Amaro Avenra was already well-known, and later that year Francesco received a golden brooch from King Umberto I during a visit to the house of Savoy. Averna’s success continued, and in 1912 Vittorio Emanuele III bestowed upon Averna the right to print the royal coat-of-arms with the inscription “
Brevetto della Real Casa
” or “Royal Household Patent” on the bottle label. Having become official supplier to the Royal household, Francesco redesigned the label to include the liqueurs various certificates and prizes. Following Francesco premature death, his wife Anna Maria took control of the business, representing an exceptional case of female entrepreneurship in early 20th century Sicily.
Francesco’s sons, Salvatore, Paolo, Emilio and Michele, opened up Averna’s export markets to America, and by 1978 Averna had become the leader in the Italian market. Today the Averna Group also embodies the Friulian wine farm Villa Frattina (which produces wines, grappa and sparkling wines) and the Piedmont confectioner Pernigotti.
