Alicia Lini is a fourth-generation winemaker whose family has been making Lambrusco since 1910. The Labrusca Rosso is her family's "traditional" Lambrusco, a perfect pairing for the classic dishes of Emilia like
lasagne
and
tagliatelle alla bolognese
,
tortellini in brodo
, and the region's famous cured meats (prosciutto di Parma, culatello, etc.) and inimitable Parmigiano Reggiano. Low in alcohol, with bright acidity and loads of fruit in the mouth, this gently sparkling red wine is the ideal complement to the rich foods of Alicia's region.
"The brisk bubbles in this scour your tongue in an entirely appealing way," writes Ray Isle, wine editor for
Food & Wine Magazine
, "while the fresh, crushed-berry fruit and mild hint of earthiness give a hint as to how good this would be paired with a plate of grilled lamb chops."
"Labrusca" is the ancient name for Lambrusco. It comes from the Latin
labrum
meaning "edge": it is believed that Lambrusco grapes grew naturally along the edges of fields cultivated for other crops by the ancient people of Italy, the Etruscans.
