Amaro Nonino Quintessentia
Amaro Nonino Quintessentia is produced by the Distilleria Nonino in Italy's north-eastern region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The company was founded in 1897 and is still family owned by Giannola and Benito, and their daughters Cristina, Antonella and Elisabetta.
Innovators in the production of grappa, the Nonino family revolutionized the industry in 1973 by producing the first single-variety grappa from the pomace of picolit grapes. This innovation shifted the emphasis in grappa-making in Italy, as other distilleries followed Nonino's lead. In 1984, Nonino was the first to distill whole grapes, marketed as a line called ŁE. These single-variety products cannot be called grappa, and are instead designated as "Distillates".
Amaro Nonino Quintessentia contains a portion of ŁE Grape Distillate, a proprietary aquavit aged in small barriques of nevers, limousin and sherry woods, plus an infusion of herbs. It is best enjoyed as a
digestivo
or as an
aperitivo
with ice and orange peel.
