We can trace Wildbacher's ancestry to Austria, where it appears in written references as far back as 1876. In all likelihood, it was brought to the province of Treviso around the turn of the 20th century. Col Sandago, an estate owned by the Prosecco producer Martino Zanetti, takes a particular interest in this otherwise unheralded variety and elevates its status by planting its vineyards to Burgundian density and allowing extended aging in new and second-passage French
tonneaux
. The resulting wine is full-bodied with moderate tannin, lively acidity, and aromas of dried herbs, toasted oak, and cherries.
