Fifty years ago, there were only a handful of Brunello producers. Today, there are literally hundreds. Collemattoni is a small winery whose vineyards lie in the southwestern section of the appellation, the highest subzone and the original area where Brunello was first made in the late 19th century. The winery’s handmade wines have long been one of the appellation’s best-kept secrets and have only recently become available in the U.S. Extended maceration and fermentation in stainless steel and traditional aging (30 months in large, old oak barrels) create powerful, tannic Brunello that will age gracefully. Don't be taken aback by this wine's tannic structure: let it breathe and you will be rewarded with its wonderful fruit flavors and aromas (if opening now, aerate for up to six hours before serving).
