The Begali winery is a family-owned and -run estate in the heart of the Valpolicella, where Amarone and Recito are made. Amarone is a unique wine in the panorama of Italian viticulture: it is a blended, dried-grape wine made from primarily from Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes. While most dried-grape wines are served as dessert wines in Italy, Amarone is traditionally served with hearty wintery dishes like the famed
pastissada
of Verona, a horse-meat stew. The Begalis' make only small amounts of this wine and its hand-crafted character shows gorgeously with each vintage.
